Transcription Without a Subscription: Pay-Once Options (2026)
Need one file transcribed without a monthly plan? Pay-per-minute and pay-once transcription services compared, with prices checked in October 2026.
If you need one or two files transcribed, paying per use is usually cheaper than a monthly plan. Human services charge per audio minute; AI services charge per minute, per file or for a short pass. On TranscribTxt the first 30 minutes of any file are free, and a Week Pass is $5 once and never renews.
Short answer: for a draft you'll check yourself, pay once for AI. Options include Sonix at $10 an hour, transcribe.free at $5 for 600 minutes, or TranscribTxt at $5 once after a free first 30 minutes. Human transcription runs $1.20 to $2.00 a minute at the entry rates we checked; pay for it only when every word must be right.

Human services: priced per audio minute
Human transcription is usually sold per use. You order a file and pay for its length:
- GoTranscript lists $1.20 a minute for a 5-day turnaround, $1.40 for 3 days, $1.60 for 1 day and $2.75 for 6 to 12 hours. A 15% loyalty discount applies from 10,000 uploaded minutes, and captions add $0.40 a minute.
- Rev lists human transcription at $1.99 a minute, "99%+ guaranteed in 12 hours or less", and says you can "order transcription services à la carte".
- Happy Scribe lists human-made transcription from about $2 a minute (check its pricing page for the current rate).
A person usually handles names, people talking at once and poor audio better than software, and that's what the price pays for. For a fuller breakdown of when it's worth it, see AI vs human transcription.
AI services: per hour, per credit or a short pass
AI transcription is mostly sold by subscription, but a few services let you pay once:
- Sonix sells pay as you go at $10 an hour, which its page calls "a single-user plan with no subscription". Every new account gets 30 free minutes.
- transcribe.free sells credit packs: $5 for 600 minutes, where one credit is one minute of audio, and packs don't expire.
- TranscribTxt transcribes the first 30 minutes of any file free. For the full file, a Week Pass is $5 once for 7 days of Pro, up to 25 hours of audio and files up to 2 GB, and it never renews. You get TXT or SRT, and the language is detected automatically among 99. It doesn't label speakers or translate.
Where TranscribTxt isn't the cheapest. A 60-minute file is free on transcribe.free with an account, and Sonix's 30 free minutes cover a short file too. For a 2-hour file, transcribe.free's $5 pack costs the same as our $5 Week Pass and leaves hours of credit that don't expire. The Week Pass suits a batch of recordings in one week: up to 25 hours of audio for $5.
Subscription-only tools, used once
TurboScribe and Otter.ai don't sell single files. Their paid plans are subscriptions, so one file costs a month:
- TurboScribe: $20 for a month of Unlimited, or $10 a month billed yearly. Details are in our TurboScribe review.
- Otter.ai: Pro at $16.99 a month covers conversations up to 90 minutes; a 2-hour file needs Business at $30 a month. See Otter.ai pricing.
If you subscribe for one job, note the renewal date and cancel before it.
How to get one file transcribed without a subscription
- Decide what accuracy you need. A draft you'll proofread suits AI. A legal record or a quote you'll publish may justify a human service.
- Note the length and format. Some tools cap files at 30 minutes or 1 hour on free plans; TranscribTxt takes MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI up to 2 GB.
- Test a free sample first. On TranscribTxt the first 30 minutes are free, and your first file needs no account.
- Pay once, only if the sample is good. A $5 Week Pass transcribes the full file without a second upload.
- Download and check. Get TXT or SRT, then proofread names, numbers and anything you'll quote.
Human or AI: which to pay for
For a 60-minute recording, the entry rates we checked put human transcription at $72 to $120. AI costs $0 to $20 at the same services. The difference pays for a trained person listening to hard audio: heavy accents, people talking over each other, technical terms. For a clear interview, a lecture or a meeting you'll summarise, AI plus your own proofreading is usually enough.
To see what a whole interview costs across more services, read how much it costs to transcribe an interview. If you're leaving Rev's human service for AI, see our Rev alternative guide. Our own plans are on the pricing page.
