What Descript actually is

Descript is a non-linear video and podcast editor where the edit timeline is shown as text. Cut a word from the transcript, the video cut follows. It also does overdub (AI voice to fix recorded mistakes), screen recording, and clip creation for social media.

It's a product for people who produce video content regularly and want a text-based editing workflow. The transcription feature exists to enable that editing workflow, not as a standalone product.

If you're a video creator using Descript's editing features, the pricing makes sense. If you're paying $24/month to get a text file from a recording, you're paying for things you don't use.

What to use instead

You need to transcribe files, not edit video

When to stay on Descript

Descript is the right tool if you're doing any of these:

• Removing filler words ("um", "uh") automatically across a recording
• Using overdub to fix recorded mistakes without re-recording
• Repurposing longer content into short social clips with captions

If any of those describe your workflow, the price is justified and the product is genuinely good for it.

When to switch

You record interviews, meetings, lectures, or podcasts and you want a text document from them. You don't edit the video. You don't need overdub. You want to download the transcript, send it somewhere, or paste it into a document.
