Six languages. As of October 2026, Otter transcribes English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese. If your content is in Portuguese, Hindi, Romanian or another language outside that list, Otter is the wrong tool.

Meeting-first design. Otter is optimized for live meetings. The interface, the integrations, the pricing — all of it assumes you're transcribing Zoom calls in real time. File upload works, but the workflow is clunky compared to tools built around it from the start.

Free plan minutes. As of October 2026, 300 minutes per month total, with a 30-minute cap per conversation. If you have a 45-minute recording or regularly exceed 5 hours of audio a month, you hit the ceiling fast.

Cost at scale. As of October 2026, Otter Pro is $8.33/month billed annually or $16.99 month to month, and Business is $19.99/user/month billed annually. For teams, that adds up. The pricing is justified if you're using every Otter feature, but it's overkill if you just need audio-to-text.

The right alternative depends on why Otter isn't working for you.

You need to transcribe video or audio files, not live meetings

Whisper (local) supports 99 languages and is completely free. The tradeoff is setup time (Python environment, GPU optional but faster) and no web interface. For privacy-sensitive content or high volume, it's worth the setup cost.

You still need meeting transcription, just not Otter.ai

Fireflies.ai is the closest Otter equivalent in terms of features: bot-based meeting transcription, speaker labels, AI summaries, CRM integrations. As of October 2026 it lists English as its main language plus 100+ others in beta, and it integrates with Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams. There is a free plan with limited transcription credits; check Fireflies' pricing page for the current allowance.

Fathom is another option specifically for meeting notes. The free plan is generous and the summaries are solid for English meetings.

You need the most accurate transcript regardless of cost

Rev human transcription ($1.99/minute as of October 2026) produces near-perfect transcripts because a person does the work. Used for legal depositions, published journalism, and academic research where every word matters. AI tools are close but not at human accuracy for unusual proper nouns and domain-specific terminology.
