WhatsApp audio to text: three ways to transcribe voice messages

WhatsApp has a built-in voice message transcription feature, but it's only available in certain countries and requires a recent version of the app. If you don't see it, or if you want better accuracy than WhatsApp's built-in tool provides, here are three methods that work.

Method 1: WhatsApp's built-in transcription (if available)

WhatsApp added voice message transcription in 2023. To check if it's enabled on your account:

iPhone: Settings → Chats → Voice Message Transcripts → toggle on

Android: Settings → Chats → Voice message transcripts → toggle on

If you see this option, transcription works automatically. Tap and hold any received voice message and the transcript appears below it. Language detection is automatic.

Availability varies by region and WhatsApp version. If the option isn't in your settings, it's not available on your account yet.

Accuracy: WhatsApp's built-in transcription is good for short, clear messages. It struggles with background noise, fast speech, and non-standard accents — common in informal voice messages.

Method 2: Export and upload to a transcription tool

This works on any WhatsApp account, any region, any device.

Step 1: Export the voice message

On iPhone:

• Tap and hold the voice message
• Tap Share
• Choose "Save to Files" — it saves as an M4A file

On Android:

• Tap the voice message
• Tap the three-dot menu
• Tap Share or Save
• The file saves as OGG to your Downloads folder

Step 2: Upload to a transcription tool

Go to TranscribTxt, upload the M4A or OGG file, and wait about 30 seconds for a short voice message. Download the transcript as text.

TranscribTxt accepts M4A and OGG directly — you don't need to convert the file first.

When to use this: Long voice messages (over 2 minutes), when you need higher accuracy than WhatsApp's built-in tool, or when you want to save the transcript somewhere other than the WhatsApp chat.

Method 3: Play and record (quickest for casual use)

If you just need a rough transcript and don't want to export files:

1. Put your phone on speaker
2. Open a transcription app on a second device (or on the same device in another window)
3. Play the WhatsApp voice message while the transcription app records

This works with iOS Voice Memos → Transcription, Google Recorder on Pixel, or any live transcription app. Quality is lower than Method 2 because you're capturing room audio, not the original file. Use this only when you need a quick, rough transcript.

Tips for better results

Short messages transcribe more accurately. WhatsApp voice messages recorded in quiet environments with a clear voice and standard accent transcribe at 95%+. Messages recorded while walking, driving, or in cafes can drop to 80-85%.

OGG files from Android work directly. You don't need to convert to MP3. TranscribTxt and most AI tools handle OGG (Opus) natively. If a tool rejects your OGG file, use an online converter to change it to MP3 — the transcription quality is the same.

Batch transcription for long conversations. If you have a long WhatsApp conversation with many voice messages you want transcribed, export each message separately, number them, and upload in order. Some transcription workflows let you combine the transcripts afterward.
