In short
To generate subtitles, upload a video or audio file up to 2 GB and download the SRT. Each subtitle is timed to the speech, and the language (one of 99) is detected for you. Files up to 30 minutes are free; for longer ones, the first 30 minutes are free and the whole file (up to 3 h) is US$2.
How to make subtitles in 3 steps
Upload the file
Drop a video or audio file into the box at the top of this page, or tap the box to choose one on your phone. Files can be up to 2 GB, and your first one needs no account.
Wait for the transcript
The language is detected for you, and each subtitle is timed to the speech. In October 2026, a 145-minute recording took 2 min 45 s once uploaded.
Download the SRT
Click SRT to save the subtitle file. Copy text or TXT gives you the same words as plain text.
What's inside the SRT file
An SRT file is plain text that video players and editors read as subtitles. Here are the first two subtitles from the SRT of our 8-second sample:
1 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:01,780 Hi team, thanks for joining. 2 00:00:02,110 --> 00:00:04,250 Today we will review the third quarter numbers,
- The subtitle's number, counting from 1.
- When it appears and disappears, as hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds, taken from the moment the words are spoken.
- The words. Each subtitle ends at a comma or the end of a sentence, or after 10 words at most, so it stays short enough to read.
On every plan, free included, you can download SRT and TXT. Pro and the Week Pass add JSON with a time for every word. Need WebVTT for a web player? Turning an SRT into VTT takes two small edits: SRT vs VTT shows how.
Add the SRT to your video
YouTube
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles and pick your video. Add the language if it isn't listed yet, click Add under Subtitles, then choose Upload file and With timing. Pick the .srt and click Save.
Premiere Pro
Import the .srt like any other media file (File > Import), then drag it from the Project panel onto your sequence. Premiere Pro puts the subtitles on a new caption track.
CapCut
On CapCut desktop or web, open Captions, choose to import a file and pick the .srt. Subtitle import works on desktop and web, not in the phone app.
VLC
Open the video, then choose Subtitle > Add Subtitle File (on a Mac: Subtitles > Add Subtitle File). Or give the .srt the same name as the video and keep both in one folder: VLC loads it on its own.
You get the SRT file here. To style the subtitles or burn them into the picture, use your video editor. Need them in another language? Read how to add subtitles in another language.
Audio to SRT, formats and languages
Audio works the same way as video. Upload an MP3, M4A or WAV and download the SRT: useful for a podcast you post as a video, or a voice-over you add to footage later. The times count from the start of the audio file.
| What works | |
|---|---|
| Video | MP4, M4V, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI |
| Audio | MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AAC |
| File size | Up to 2 GB on every plan |
| Languages | 99, detected automatically |
| Results | SRT, TXT and Copy text on every plan; JSON with word times on Pro and the Week Pass |
Only have a YouTube link? YouTube to textgives you the video's own captions as text. For an SRT file, upload the video file here.

Common questions
Is this subtitle generator free?
Yes, for the first 30 minutes of any file, SRT included. First file without sign-up, 3 a week with a free account. For a longer video, the whole file (up to 3 h) is US$2 once.
How do I convert a video to an SRT file?
Upload the video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and more, up to 2 GB), wait for the transcript, then click SRT. Each subtitle gets start and end times from the speech. You can then add the file in YouTube Studio, Premiere Pro, CapCut (desktop or web) or VLC.
Can I make an SRT file from audio, like an MP3?
Yes. Upload an MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus or AAC file and download the SRT the same way as a video. The times count from the start of the audio, so the subtitles line up with a video that starts at the same moment.
Which languages does it support, and can it translate subtitles?
99 languages, detected automatically, so there's nothing to set. The subtitles come out in the language that's spoken. For another language, run the text lines of the SRT through a translation tool and keep the number and time lines as they are.
Does it put the subtitles on the video, and can I edit them?
You get an SRT file, which players and editors show over the video. To burn the subtitles into the picture or style them, import the SRT into CapCut, Premiere Pro or another editor and export the video from there; on YouTube, upload it in YouTube Studio. To fix a word, open the SRT in any text editor.
