How do I transcribe a lecture with timestamps?

  1. Pick the lecture recording

Drop the file into the box at the top of this page: a voice memo from your phone, a Zoom or Teams class recording, or a lecture video your course lets you download. MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV and more, up to 2 GB. Your first file needs no account. On a phone, keep the page open until the upload finishes.

  2. Read the first 30 minutes free

A lecture over 30 minutes goes straight to a free preview, so you see how well your recording comes out before you pay. We keep that upload for up to 24 hours, so you can finish it without uploading again.

  3. Get the whole lecture for US$2

One payment covers the whole recording, up to 3 hours, and it never renews. We transcribe the rest of the same upload.

  4. Download it with timestamps

On every plan you can download TXT, SRT and VTT. SRT and VTT put a timestamp on every line, so you can jump back to any moment of the lecture. With any paid option you also get JSON with word times and Word.

Common questions

How do I transcribe a 2-hour lecture recording with timestamps?

Upload the recording to TranscribTxt, audio or video, up to 2 GB. The first 30 minutes are transcribed free while you have a free file left. To get all 2 hours, pay US$2 once: it covers the whole recording, up to 3 hours. Then download SRT or VTT, which put a timestamp on every line, or plain TXT.

How much does it cost to transcribe a lecture?

On TranscribTxt, the whole transcript of one recording up to 3 hours is US$2, paid once. For a longer recording, or several in a week, TranscribTxt's 7-day Week Pass is US$5 once and covers up to 25 hours of audio. The first 30 minutes are free while you have a free file left, so you can check the text first.

Which lecture recordings can I upload?

Audio or video up to 2 GB: a voice memo from your phone (M4A), a Zoom or Teams recording (MP4 or M4A), or a lecture video your course lets you download (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM). A video over 2 GB in MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM usually works too: your browser pulls out just the audio and uploads that. In our test, a 5 GB, 27-minute MP4 lecture was fully transcribed 43 seconds after we chose it, in a desktop browser on a fast connection.

Will the transcript show who is speaking?

No. TranscribTxt doesn't label speakers, so the lecturer and questions from the room are one continuous text. The timestamps in SRT and VTT make it easy to find a question again.

Which languages does it transcribe?

99 languages, detected automatically, so a lecture in Spanish, French or German needs no setting. A lecture that switches language is transcribed best when one language dominates.

Am I allowed to record and transcribe a lecture?

It depends on your school, your lecturer and where you study. Many universities allow recording for personal study; some ask for the lecturer's permission first, and disability services can arrange it as an accommodation. Check your course rules or ask the lecturer before you record. A lecture usually belongs to the lecturer or the school, so keep the transcript for your own study unless they say you can share it.

Will a 2-hour lecture take hours to transcribe?

No. In October 2026, half of the uploaded files were transcribed in 14 seconds or less, and a 145-minute recording took 2 minutes 45 seconds. Times don't include uploading, which depends on your connection.

What happens to my file?

Your file is deleted from our storage after processing, and transcripts aren't stored on our servers. If you take the free 30-minute preview of a longer file, we keep that upload for up to 24 hours so you can finish it without uploading again.

Several lectures a week?

The 7-day Week Pass is US$5 once and never renews; Pro is US$10/mo for lectures every week and renews until you cancel. See all prices.
