Zoom keeps transcripts in its web portal: sign in, open Recordings & Transcripts and download the meeting's .vtt file. It's there only if the host's paid account had transcripts turned on. Recorded to your computer instead? Upload the MP4 or M4A: the first 30 minutes are free, and the whole file (up to 3 hours) is $2 once.
Which Zoom transcript do you have?

No Zoom transcript, but you have the recording?
That happens a lot: a local recording, a free plan, or a host who didn't switch transcripts on. A recording saved to your computer is already a file, usually in the Zoom folder inside Documents (here's where Zoom saves local recordings). The audio-only .m4a is the smallest file to upload.
Have the Zoom recording? Get the text here
The first 30 minutes are free, and your first file needs no account. The whole recording, up to 3 hours, is $2 once; for several meetings, a $5 Week Pass covers 7 days. You can also start on the Zoom transcription page, which takes the same files.
Where is the transcript of a cloud recording?
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal and open Recordings & Transcripts.
- Under Cloud recordings, click the meeting.
- Open the recording: the transcript shows on the right of the playback page. If a transcript (.vtt) file is listed with the recording files, download it there.
The transcript isn't there the moment the meeting ends. Zoom processes it after the recording and emails you when the recording is ready and again when the transcript is. Zoom only makes this transcript for cloud recordings on Pro, Business, Education or Enterprise accounts, with audio transcription turned on.
Where are Zoom meeting transcripts saved?
Meeting transcripts are a separate setting from recording transcripts. On a Pro, Business or Enterprise account the host turns them on in settings; Zoom has them off by default. After the meeting, a host can view, download or delete the transcript only if "Allow hosts to view and manage transcripts after the meeting" is on. You'll find it in the web portal under Profile → Recordings and Transcripts → Transcripts tab, as a .vtt file.
Why is the Save transcript button gone?
Zoom removed it in May 2026. Its support pages say users can no longer save or download closed captions, and that the Full transcript and Save captions settings were folded into a new Meeting transcript setting. So:
- For future meetings: ask the host (or your admin) to turn on Meeting transcripts before the call, or record to the cloud with audio transcription on.
- For a meeting that's already over: use the recording, if there is one. Without a recording or a transcript, there's nothing left to export.
Can a participant download the Zoom transcript?
Only if the host or the account admin allows it: Zoom's admins choose who may save meeting transcripts, from the host only to everyone. If you can't see a download option, ask the host to send you the .vtt, or the recording so you can transcribe it.
How do I open the .vtt in Word or Google Docs?
A .vtt file is a timed transcript in WebVTT format: line numbers, timestamps, then the words.
- From Zoom's .vtt: open it in any text editor, strip the numbers and timestamps, and paste the text into Word or Google Docs.
- From the recording: upload the MP4 or M4A and download a plain TXT, which pastes straight into a document with no timestamps. Need exact times for quotes? Download the SRT too. A Word file comes with the Week Pass and Pro.
Turning the transcript into notes? See how to write meeting minutes from a recording. Zoom's file may show speaker names; TranscribTxt doesn't label speakers, so add names where they matter.

Where can I find a Zoom transcript file?
In the Zoom web portal, under Recordings & Transcripts. A cloud recording's transcript is a .vtt file on the meeting's page under Cloud recordings; a meeting transcript is on the Transcripts tab, if the host had meeting transcripts on and may keep them. A recording saved to your computer has no Zoom transcript: the MP4 and M4A files are in the Zoom folder inside Documents.
Why is the Save transcript button missing in Zoom?
Zoom removed it in May 2026. Zoom says users can no longer save or download closed captions, and the Full transcript and Save captions settings were folded into a new Meeting transcript setting, which is off by default and needs a paid plan. For a meeting that's already over, use the recording if there is one.
Can I get a transcript of a Zoom meeting after it's over?
Yes, if the meeting was recorded to the cloud with audio transcription on, or the host had meeting transcripts on. If you only have the recording file, upload it to a transcription tool: on TranscribTxt the first 30 minutes are free, and the whole file (up to 3 hours) is $2 once. If nothing was recorded or transcribed, Zoom can't recreate the text.
Is there a downloader for Zoom videos and transcripts?
Zoom's own Download button in the web portal covers the cloud recordings and transcripts you have access to. Browser extensions exist too; check what access they ask for before you install one.
How do I convert a Zoom transcript to Word?
Open the .vtt file in any text editor, remove the sequence numbers and timestamps, and paste the text into Word or Google Docs. Or upload the Zoom recording to TranscribTxt and download a plain TXT, which pastes into Word with no timestamps; Word download comes with the Week Pass and Pro.
