In short
To transcribe French audio to text, upload the recording to TranscribTxt: an MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4 or MOV file up to 2 GB. The language is detected for you, and the text comes back in French, ready to copy or download as TXT or SRT. TranscribTxt lets you check the text before you pay: while you have a free file left (1 a week without an account, 3 with a free one), the first 30 minutes of a long recording are transcribed free.
How do I transcribe French audio to text?
Pick your French recording
Drop the audio or video file into the box at the top of this page: MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV and more, up to 2 GB. Your first file needs no account.
Leave the language on automatic
"Language of the recording" is set to Detect automatically, so there's nothing to set up. If you'd rather be sure, pick French in that list before you upload.
Read the first 30 minutes free
While you have a free file left, a recording up to 30 minutes is transcribed in full, and a longer one goes straight to a free preview of its first 30 minutes. Check the French text before you pay.
Get the whole file for US$2
One payment covers the whole recording, up to 3 hours (a file up to 500 MB), and it never renews. The rest is transcribed from the same upload. Copy the text, or download it as TXT, or as SRT with timestamps.
How accurate is French transcription?
We don't publish an accuracy percentage. Clear speech, with one person talking at a time, comes out cleanest; background noise, cross-talk and phone audio cause more mistakes, in any language. The first 30 minutes are free while you have a free file left, so check the text on your own recording before you pay.
French from France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland or Africa is transcribed the same way, and the text keeps é, è, à, ç and the other accented letters. Names of people and places, and English words dropped into French, are the parts most worth a check.

Common questions
How do I transcribe French audio to text?
Upload the recording to TranscribTxt, up to 2 GB: an MP3, M4A or WAV file, or a video such as MP4 or MOV. French is detected automatically, and the text comes back in French, ready to copy or download as TXT or SRT. Your first file needs no account.
Is French audio to text free?
Yes, for a recording up to 30 minutes, while you have a free file left: 1 a week without an account, 3 with a free one. For a longer French recording, such as a 2-hour lecture, the first 30 minutes are free and the whole recording up to 3 hours (a file up to 500 MB) is US$2 once.
Does it handle Canadian, Belgian, Swiss and African French?
Yes. French from Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Africa and France is all transcribed as French, with the same accented letters. Strong regional slang, English words dropped into French, and names of people and places are where mistakes are most likely, so check those parts.
How much does a 2-hour French recording cost?
On TranscribTxt, the whole transcript of one recording up to 3 hours (a file up to 500 MB) is US$2, paid once. For a longer recording, or several in a week, TranscribTxt's 7-day Week Pass is US$5 once and covers up to 25 hours of audio. If your 2-hour file is over 500 MB, the Week Pass transcribes it in full. The first 30 minutes are free while you have a free file left, so you can check the French text before you pay.
Does the text keep French accents?
Yes. The transcript is written in French with its accented letters, such as é, è, ê, à and ç, and they stay in the copied text and in the TXT and SRT files. If an older video player shows odd characters in the SRT, set its subtitle encoding to UTF-8.
What if my recording is detected as the wrong language?
Pick French in "Language of the recording", under the upload box, and upload the file again: the whole file is then transcribed as French. Picking it before the first upload saves a second run. Your choice stays set in this browser, so switch back to Detect automatically for a file in another language.
